In May 2024, I had the profound honour of addressing an audience in the historic Rose Garden of No. 10 Downing Street—a space where iconic leaders like Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher once stood. As I shared my first words as the newly elected Group Leader of the Milton Keynes Conservative Group, I was filled with immense gratitude and resolve. This was more than a personal milestone; it was a testament to the power of networks, strategy, and shared vision.

The Rose Garden is not just a backdrop; it symbolises the weight of leadership and the importance of action. Standing there, I reflected on my journey—from a frustrated volunteer witnessing systemic failures to leading a group of councillors committed to delivering real change. My political career, shaped by challenges and fueled by determination, has shown me the transformative potential of connection and collaboration.

Building Connections, Driving Change

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that success is rarely achieved in isolation. Whether as a Parliamentary candidate, councillor, or now as Group Leader, the ability to leverage networks has been instrumental in achieving meaningful results. Our recent local elections in Milton Keynes showcased this. By strategising, fostering collaboration, and working tirelessly, we reclaimed two wards and increased our vote share significantly.

This success was not just about numbers. It was about creating a shared vision, empowering our team, and ensuring that every resident’s voice was heard. It's the same approach I bring to my consultancy work—helping businesses and individuals build strong networks, craft impactful strategies, and achieve measurable results.

Lessons from Leadership

Leading the smallest opposition group in Milton Keynes Council presents unique challenges. But challenges are also opportunities. With a team of experienced councillors, I am committed to supporting our residents and nurturing the next generation of Conservative leaders. This year, our focus is clear: to train and cultivate candidates for the all-out elections in 2026 and to continue championing the values that resonate with our communities.

The skills I’ve honed in political leadership—strategic planning, public speaking, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy—are equally valuable in the consultancy space. I understand what it takes to unite teams around a common goal, influence decision-making, and deliver results under pressure.

The Power of Place

Speaking in the Rose Garden was a career highlight, but it was also a reminder of the power of place. That space, steeped in history, serves as a powerful metaphor for what we can achieve when we combine vision, determination, and the right connections.

For businesses and individuals looking to make an impact, the lesson is clear: surround yourself with the right people, build meaningful relationships, and never underestimate the value of a strong network.

Your Opportunity to Connect

If you’re looking for guidance on strategy, leadership, or building the connections you need to succeed, I’d love to help. My consultancy work draws on years of experience in politics, business development, and community advocacy. We can help craft a plan that takes your ambitions to the next level.

The Rose Garden taught me that great leaders not only rise to the occasion but also inspire others to do the same. Let’s work together to create your next big moment.
